I am a beginner in photography and this is one of my favorite images. I have a Nikon D40X with the 18-55 kit lens and a 55-200VR lens. I am reading the Nikon D40/D40X Digital Field Guide by David Busch and now shooting mostly in manual. This is from an afternoon session as Huntington Park in Newport News, Virginia. The vignetting is obvious here due to the clear skies; I need to work on minimizing it as I see it often with this lens.
Nice photo Lee! Honestly, I like the edge vignetting. I was going to ask if you did that in Lightroom or Photoshop :)
If you don't like it and have either of those programs, they can both zap it for you.
Great shot. I agree with Shawn and Lesa - The vignetting works on this image, however if you do want to eliminate it in camera you can usually solve the problem by closing down the aperture a stop or two. If you're shooting at your lenses maximum aperture which is say for example 5.6 try setting it to 8 or 11 (and adjust your shutter speed accordingly) and this will more than likely get rid of vignetting.
Thanks to all for the kind words. Great encouragement! I like this photo as is also; but I thought vignetting was generally frowned upon and so I pointed it out instead of waiting for someone else to do it (-; Stage fright with my first request for critique. Anyway, thanks again for the compliments.
Thomas, thanks for the aperture tip, I will work with it. I see a lot of noise when I increase ISO past 400, so I generally keep aperture towards the high end to get enough light and keep my ISO at 100 or 200. Now I understand what they mean by a "slow lens". My cheapo 18-55mm kit lens is becoming my weapon of choice for this reason.
I have no issue with the vignetting on this image. Without or without it's a nice shot.
I am noticing some banding in the lower quarter though and don't know if it's my MacBook Pro's screen or the image.
EDIT: The banding is only visible when viewed inside my web browser. I don't see it when viewing in preview so the image is fine. Leaving the comment in case anyone sees the bands in their browser as well.
