To answer one of your questions: I'm not in Tokyo now. In my previous job I had the opportunity to travel to China, Korea, Japan and other points in Asia as well as Europe and South America. I usually took a camera with me, but usually it was a usually a small pocket sized digital since I usually didn't feel like lugging my SLR and lenses with me on a two week trip. (Also I was concerned about having it stolen.)
I've always loved photography. My father was an advanced amateur back in the dark room days. I spent many an evening with with him mixing chemicals and developing film and prints, including color slides (Anscochrome). I now have a bit more time to devote to personal interests and I’d like to get back into the hobby in a more structured way. I’m ramping up my skills by reading (best book so far: Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson) but I’m also trying to get out and shoot more pictures. I fell like you can learn something from every picture you take, even the bad ones.
