Nikon D300 -or- Canon 40D

I am seriously considering taking the plunge and finally getting the pro digital setup I have wanting... a big incentive is getting a change to shoot with a pro photographer who is willing to take me under his wing and show me the ropes!!! He does really good journalistic wedding photography and portraiture... something I'd like to get into again.

For me it's between the following two setup:

Nikon D300 DX Digital D-SLR Camera Outfit with 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
or
Canon EOS-40D Digital SLR Camera Body Kit with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

The Nikon seems to be the better camera (I have an old bias towards Nikons) and I have a few old F mount Nikon Lens that I could use from my N8008... BUT I use A Canon 20D at work for product shots and like it (and could probably borrow a nice 100mm Macro lens from time to time... Also the photographer I will be working with uses a Canon EOS-1D Mark III so I could probably use his lenses as well.

PLus the Canon is about $500 cheaper.... PLEASE help me decide!!!

It's easy to decide - it doesn't matter.

If those are your choices, you can't go wrong with either one. If the pro you are shooting with uses Canon, go with Canon...

Yeah, I've been reading reviews of both and the Nikon sounds excellent, but for the price of the D300 kit and a flash I could get the Canon kit, flash, a 50mm prime and a 70-300 zoom! It's just hard to get over my Nikon bias I guess.

Does anyone on this list own one of these cameras? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I've had my Canon 40D for about 3 months now... superb. I don't think you will regret your decision

I recently purchased a 40D and really, really love it! You won't regret it. I work with photographers and they keep wanting to borrow it to play around with it for shoots. (And they all use Canon 5Ds) They feel that it's an amazing camera for the cost. Plus if you can borrow equipment then i say combine the power. That is actually the reason I went for the 40D, the photographers all have canons I work with, and simply having a lens or two to borrow from a friend is nice to mix it up a bit.
